Cities that make up each DMA

DMA boundaries and the cities within a DMA are very static information, that is, there is little change from year to year. New data and DMA rankings are published by Nielsen each September; if there are changes in the cities which comprise a DMA, this Excel will be updated.

    DMA Geographical Maps

The attached are two "Very High Resolution" PDF Geographic views of US Domestic Designated Market Areas. Each DMA is a non-overlapping geographical area for measuring TV audiences, in terms of 'TV Households'. A DMA is an assembled collection of their smallest building blocks: Counties. [In a few isolated cases, a county is divided by ZIP code.]

Counties making up a DMA are not necessarily contiguous - take a close look at the Denver DMA and the remote counties which it includes. Or notice the Salt Lake City DMA, which includes all the counties of Utah along with another 9 counties from 3 other states.

Two Maps are provided, the 2013 and the 2016 releases. There are no significant differences in the DMA definitions, but the map presentations vary.

    Directv Official Website Market Resources

The links below provide Interactive Access to the official Directv.com website, providing information regarding different aspects of HD Local Service

    Neighboring DMA Local Channels
Often referred to as “Significantly Viewed Channels”. These channels from an adjacent DMA are offered by County and then by Zip Code within that County. Portland, OR - Fringe Locals is a good example.

Local Network Channel / DNS Availability
Responds with a listing of your HD and SD Local Satellite Channels and Over-the-Air (OTA) Channels. The response also indicates if Distant Network Service (DNS) is available for your location.

    Local Channels Lookup
Returns available Local Channels based upon your Zip Code.

    Coming HD Local Markets
The last HD Locals DMA added was in April, 2016. Directv already covers 99.58% of the US Domestic Market; but if you are in a market awaiting HD Locals – check this link regularly !

    Coming HD Local Channels
This link takes you to the TPN Map thread which provides a current Excel of all channel information. Think of active CONUS or LIL channels as 'normal' satellite broadcast channels. The TPN Map Excel then has a HYBRID tab to contain all the 'abnormal' channels. Among these other types of Interactive and Test channels are Test: Local-into-Local Channels. New HD Local Channels typically pass through this stage of testing before lighting up and becoming active.

An updated Nielsen DMA Geographic Map has been added to Post #3 of this thread.

While there have been only minor changes in the DMA boundaries,
the new map changes the display and presentation.

These are "Very High Resolution" PDF maps, please zoom in to high levels of
magnification for the greatest detail of your area of interest.

The newly released (thank you Doctor J !) 2018 Nielsen DMA Rankings have been incorporated and posted in Post #1.

This is the first year in my recollection that the "Total TV HouseHolds", which is the basis for the Nielsen ratings, has dropped. The 2018 data has lost some 2.5 million households compared to last year's data. The Directv coverage of the U.S has statistically gone up, only because those 12 DMAs not provided service have shrunk at a faster rate than the rest of the 198 covered DMAs.

    The Big Winners this year:
    Yakima went up 8 notches
    Reno went up 7
    Tucson went up 6
    Jacksonville went up 5
    Ft. Meyers went up 5

    The Big Losers:
    Norfolk lost 5 positions
    Bluefield lost 4
    Peoria lost 4
    Topeka lost 4
